Why We Do This
While bullying is a difficult topic, we believe that in a small and trusted group setting we can address important concepts, scenarios and experiences that help boys and girls be realistic and appropriate in responding to bullying situations, while becoming leaders in the anti-bullying movement. We've seen eight hours make a significant difference in the life of our students.
First...to Open their eyes
Step Up helps 4th grade students talk about and make sense of bullying: why it happens, how and when to respond to it, and what to do in a bullying situation. Through conversations, role playing and other exercises, we help them understand the many nuances of why young people resort to bullying. This is a safe place to talk about it.
To Build Confidence
Students graduate with ideas, strategies and the determination to safely stand up for themselves and others in a bullying situation. In addition, it helps them recognize that fitting in and having healthy friendships are not the same. Our goal is to help influence a more positive culture between all kids at school.
To Think About Relationships
Relationships are complicated. We all want to belong, have friends, and feel connected. It’s an important developmental milestone for young people to build self-confidence and not rely on others to give it to them. We work with students to accept the differences in others, and also be more accepting of themselves.
To Grow Skills
4th grade is an important developmental time in a kids' lives. With actionable skills, conversations, awareness and coaching, we can turn many a social "playing field" into an equal one for all young people.

By introducing these concepts in 4th grade, students will take their skills to middle school, high school and beyond.
